I’m Julia Garza!

I am originally from Brazil and my native language is Portuguese. In 2006, I graduated with a degree in Gastronomy in my hometown Vitoria, Brazil. This degree is similar to a nutrition degree in the states as it focuses both on food science as well as the culinary arts. After graduating, I moved to the United Kingdom to study English and lived there for four years. During my time in the UK, I had the opportunity to visit other countries and experience many different cultures. In addition, I spent nearly two years in Switzerland, studying French and working.

Food has always been a passion of mine and plays a big a part in my life. Since a very young age, I have been very curious and interested in learning how to cook. I believe I can express my creativity when I cook, mixing different colors, textures and flavors. Food is something so powerful and I believe it has the ability to heal not only through nutrients it provides but also through the love that is put into the cooking. Since I moved to San Luis Obispo in 2018, I have worked alongside Marlena Tanner at the Central Coast Treatment Center, as a Nutrition Assistant. This position introduced me to and gave me a deeper understanding of eating disorders, nutrition and mental health. During my time there, I utilized my cooking background and my passion for nurturing others to provide quality support to clients during their recovery.

Today, I am a passionate mother of one, and becoming a mother has been the greatest experience of my life. Assisting in the Yellow House Project, I currently help with administrative tasks but look forward to engaging more fully in the kitchen with clients once COVID-19 allows us to return to in-person services.
