Collaboration is key.
If you have a patient who’s struggling with restrictive or binge eating, or who’s exhibiting abnormal weight loss or gain, we encourage you to refer to a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor.
What makes a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor (CEDS-S) unique?
This is a distinct area of dietetics that encompasses intensive psychological and behavioral health interventions. There are only about 200 Certified Eating Disorder Dietitians in the United States as of 2017, and 67 Certified Eating Disorder Specialists and Supervisors internationally as of 2018.
Above and beyond standard dietetic practices, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists and Supervisors understand the inherent risks of behaviors such as dieting. When working with disordered eating and eating disorder clients, it’s important to refrain from categorizing foods as good versus bad. Instead, certified eating disorder dietitians focus on guiding clients toward intuitive eating using a non-diet, psychology-based approach.

Education is the first step toward prevention.
By providing education around eating disorder prevention and treatment, we can create a stronger collective understanding of this often misunderstood disease.
In addition to providing counseling services, we advocate for prevention and treatment education. As a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Consultant through the international association of eating disorder professionals (iaedp), Marlena is able to offer supervision to dietitians interested in earning their iaedp credential. We are also available for in-service on eating disorders, including collaboration with doctors, pediatricians, psychiatrists, therapists, dietitians, schools, and other treatment programs.
Marlena also has experience as a preceptor for dietetic interns and teaching the Eating Disorder segment of Nutrition Counseling at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
